Why health guidance has to work offline in Africa
Most health apps assume a fast, always-on connection. For millions of people that assumption is the reason help never arrives. Here is how we designed around it.
When someone falls ill far from a clinic, the first question is rarely "which app should I open." It is "is this serious enough to travel for." Getting that answer wrong in either direction is costly. Travel needlessly and you lose a day's wages. Wait too long and a treatable illness becomes an emergency.
The connection you cannot count on
Across much of the continent, data is expensive and coverage is patchy. An app that only works with a strong signal is not a health tool. It is a demo. So HowBody's core guidance runs entirely on the device.
The symptom checker grades danger using World Health Organization danger-sign criteria without a single network request. Facilities and their routes are downloaded while you are online and kept for when you are not.
Design for the worst case, not the demo
Every feature is built to degrade gracefully. Online, you get turn-by-turn routing and live consultations. Offline, you still get triage, saved facilities, your donor card and clear directions.
That single principle, assume no signal, changes everything about how the product is built, and it is the reason HowBody is useful on the days that matter most.
